About the Author

Victor Goertzel, Ph.D., a psychologist specializing in group and individual psychotherapy, lived in Palo Alto and San Jose, California. After receiving his B.A. and M.A. degrees in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, he was awarded a Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan in 1953. He was a member of the American Psychological Association, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, the American Orthopsychiatric Association, and was a Past President of the National Association for Gifted Children.

Mildred George Goertzel, formerly a high school teacher, became director of the Forum School for Emotionally Disturbed Children in Pater- son, New Jersey, but later devoted full time to writing. She received her bachelor's degree in English from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and did graduate work in English at the University of Chicago and North- western University, as well as in child development at the University of California at Berkeley.

Ted George Goertzel, a son of Mildred and Victor, has continued the family tradition of studying people, particularly as they are involved in social or political change. He has published six books and numerous professional papers primarily concerning social movements, generational conflict, and social class and political attitudes. Ted currently is professor and former chairperson in the Department of Sociology at Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey. He received his B.A. degree from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio with a major in sociology and anthropology. Both his M.A. degree in sociology and Latin American studies and his Ph.D. degree in sociology were awarded by Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to teaching at Rutgers, Ted taught at the University of Oregon and the University of São Paulo.
