Description: This is the fifth edition of the pathology volume in the Crash Course series that covers general pathology, as well as different organ systems. The fourth edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: The aim of this book, and the Crash Course series in general, is to provide a review of pathology in a compact, manageable book. The text is succinct, but it provides sufficient depth of information in both general and organ system pathology.
Audience: This book is written primarily for undergraduate students and medical students. However, students in variety of health professions who attend pathology courses could find it useful.
Features: Coming seven years after the previous edition, this edition is extensively revised and edited. Some chapters, such as head and neck and hepatopancreaticobiliary pathology, have been substantially restructured. Moreover, new chapters on molecular and postmortem pathology have been added. New questions (both multiple choice and extended matching questions), as well as clinical scenarios on death certification have also been added. The book is divided into 18 chapters and starts with an introductory chapter and postmortem pathology, followed by chapters on inflammation, repair and cell death, and cancer. Infectious disease and molecular pathology are covered in separate chapters. The remainder of the book is dedicated to the pathology of different organ systems (nervous system, head and neck, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, hepatopancreaticobiliary system, kidney and urinary tract, endocrine system, female and male reproductive systems, musculoskeletal system, blood and immune system, and skin). The book concisely covers basic concepts in pathology, as well as the most common non-neoplastic and neoplastic conditions of different organs. It is well written, and although it does not go into too much detail, the most important features (epidemiology, clinical, pathological, prognostic) are covered well. The text is accompanied by multiple figures, useful tables, and some images (mostly gross and occasional microscopic). In addition, there are "Hints and Tips," "Clinical Note," "Common Pitfalls," "Red Flag," and "Molecular" boxes that provide practical and useful additional information (e.g. clinical pearls, useful mnemonics, etc.). A brief chapter summary is provided at the end of each chapter. Self-assessment questions at the end of the book, both multiple choice and extended matching, are well written and provide a great review. The answers are well written and offer good explanations.
Assessment: This book continues to be a great resource for undergraduate and medical students who take pathology courses. The fifth edition has been extensively updated and restructured. It is well written and illustrated and allows for a quick review of the material. Figures and images are of great quality and educational value. Tables are also very informative, especially when used to compare and contrast different diseases. The colorful boxes with clinical notes, pitfalls, hints and tips, etc., are very interesting, practical, and add extra flavor to the book. This is a great book that will greatly facilitate learning basic pathology. I highly recommend it.
