Description: This is the second edition of a comprehensive presentation of critical care principles as applied in the emergency department. The first edition was published in 2012.
Purpose: As the complexity of patients arriving at the emergency department continues to increase, emergency medicine physicians are called upon to provide initial stabilization and critical care management. This book focuses on the tools needed in the emergency department to manage the high acuity patient.
Audience: Emergency medicine physicians and providers in other disciplines who cross cover or admit from the emergency department are an appropriate audience for this book, which features a multidisciplinary group of contributors from academic medical centers in the United States.
Features: Presentations follow the hierarchy of evaluation for the critically ill patient arriving in the emergency department. Thus, initial chapters emphasize techniques to maintain a patent airway, secure adequate oxygenation (and ventilation) and stabilize the circulation. Subsequent chapter groups emphasize problems leading to patient presentation in the emergency room including gastrointestinal disorders such as bleeding, neurological problems including head trauma, acute endocrine and toxicology dilemmas, and sepsis. Concluding presentations provide significant detail on ultrasound and echocardiography in initial assessment and management of acute illness. A final group of chapters provides detail on special situations including targeted temperature management as applied after cardiac arrest, special needs of the pediatric patient, multisystem trauma, and considerations pertinent to end-of-life issues. Chapters are concise and well written. Multicolored tables and illustrations are outstanding. The majority of photographs also reproduce extremely well. The table of contents groups chapters on an anatomic basis while a detailed subject index includes separate citations for figures and tables.
Assessment: This second edition benefits from an increase in the number and quality of illustrations and updated content. With effective summaries and an emphasis on the essential, this book will serve emergency providers well.
