About the Author

JOHN McINTOSH KELL (1823-1900): Career officer in the United States Navy, serving in the most important naval activities during his lifetime prior to the war with Mexico, including with Adm. Perry. When the Civil War began he resigned his position and joined the Confederate States Navy. He served with Raphael Semmes on the "Alabama" and was well positioned to record the history of that ship.
