Cultural Ghosts: Transient Trash Sculptures Create Found Environmental Art
Have you ever seen something move just at the edge of your peripheral vision? You turn slightly to see what it is, and are shocked by the fact that what you see is more frightening than you dared imagine? This happened to artist, Ken O’Toole, who then began to record and document the apparitions he encountered.

No, they were not actual spirits “ghosts” of the departed. They were harbingers of the discarded – plastic bags tangled in trees.

In this environmental monograph of nearly four dozen beautiful black and white photographs, O’Toole gives a poetic voice to specters of roadside debris. In doing so, he changes the way we see what we would rather ignore.

From O’Toole’s perspective, littered landscapes are transformed from “messy” to “magical.”

About the Author

Ken O’Toole is an abstract expressionist working in various media. Much of his work involves creating a “visual vocabulary” to communicate emotional and spiritual experiences and create new perceptions. His most recent work, paper sculptures combining action painting and paper folding techniques, display a myriad of surfaces resembling character sets and surreal landscapes.

Choosing the "classroom of doing," and remaining open to experimentation, rather than more traditional training, has allowed O'Toole to accelerate his growth as an artist.

O’Toole has recently received recognition by the Madi Art Museum of Dallas and the 2010 Rio Brazos National Juried Exhibit in Granbury. His visionary “Cultural Ghosts” series of photographs were the inspiration for the 2011 Sustaining Artists Juried Exhibit in Fort Worth.

Other exhibitions include:
Ann Metzger National Juried Exhibition in St. Louis, Missouri | Juror: Marla Prather - Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art - Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York | 2012
