Description: This succinct reference focuses on the most important aspects of emergency medicine. It is well organized, with each chapter dedicated to a different aspect of emergency medicine, including procedures and ultrasound, which have their own chapters. It covers various emergencies with sections on clinical findings as well as treatment and disposition, which is oftentimes ignored in books like these. Since the emphasis is on treatment, which can change more than pathology can, this update is appropriate. The previous edition published in 2011.
Purpose: The authors don't provide a lengthy introduction, which is perhaps appropriate since this is clearly a reference. The goal is to enable emergency physicians to get quick updates on current treatments for diseases they are already familiar with, instead of to teach pathology or the nuances of the diagnosis. The book does a very good job of being succinct and to the point. The chapters on topics with which I am familiar are accurate in their recommendations.
Audience: The audience is practicing emergency medicine physicians. The emphasis is on treatments that need to be done in the emergency department itself (not in the hospital) and the disposition of the patient, which is the focus of any good emergency department. It successfully meets those goals, and it does so in a succinct and relevant way. It does not provide a lot of extraneous information, which is easy to do in emergency medicine books because it is such a broad field.
Features: This book covers various emergencies by organ system. It does a great job of including only those that are or can be actual emergencies, and does not cover routine topics that are not relevant to the specialty of emergency medicine. The writing is succinct and does not go into irrelevant pathophysiology or esoteric material. The pages are high quality, although not the most colorful, and the images are exclusively black and white, which is fine but not preferred. Text is highlighted in a few shades of pink and, although this is fine, it could have been a bit higher quality. There are no glaring omissions.
Assessment: This book stands out because of the fact that it is a reference rather than a primary textbook. It differs from Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Study Guide, 8th edition, Tintinalli et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2016), or Rosen's Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice, 9th edition, Walls (Elsevier, 2018), in that regard. It is a good book to glance at for a quick refresher on a specific pathology. I am still a learner (a resident) and it is a good way for me to quickly learn about a specific pathology without having to read extraneous information that may not be relevant to the issue at hand. It seems to be current, since it includes recent changes in practice that have occurred in the last few years.
