Description: This is the 15th edition of a classic surgical reference book. The previous edition was published in 2015, and rapid advances in the field of surgery amply justify this revision.
Purpose: The book is intended as "a ready source of information about diseases managed by surgeons." The book is the direct descendent of the much beloved Current Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment, Dunphy and Way (Lange Medical Publications), which went through 12 editions under the same authorship. The objectives have not changed and remain worthy. The book meets its objectives.
Audience: The target audience consists of students, residents, and practitioners (both medical and surgical), according to the book. It will be most welcome as a book for medical students and/or residents. It will also be useful for review by surgeons preparing for board examinations, or for non-surgeons seeking a compact introduction to surgical management of various diseases. The author and contributors are all highly credible authorities in their fields.
Features: The book follows a traditional sequence of chapters, beginning with general considerations such as preoperative preparation, inflammation, and wound healing. Chapters on management of the injured and burned patient segue into a series of chapters that literally go from head to toe, beginning with otolaryngology and concluding with some of the surgical specialties. New chapters on neurosurgery and weight management have been added; the remainder of the chapters have been revised. The book is carefully edited for clarity and lavishly illustrated with clear drawings and radiographs. Selected references are given at the end of the subsection to which they refer. Each chapter closes with a series of multiple-choice questions.
Assessment: This is a good book that continues the lineage established by Dunphy and Way in a meaningful and modern fashion. The inclusion of multiple-choice questions will add to the value for trainees. References are carefully selected and positioned within the book (instead of at the end of each chapter) and the entire book is organized to be easy for trainees to use. This updated edition certainly justifies replacing the previous edition and it will be of special value to medical students and residents.
