Description: This is the 2021 edition of this annual update providing the current accepted standards of medical care. This is an anniversary edition that has been annually published since 1961.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive digest of internal medicine highlighting the recent updates clinicians should be aware of. The history of these annual updates has been particularly helpful in maintaining the updates in internal medicine and this edition continues this extraordinary tradition extremely well.
Audience: This is a book for every clinician, whether primary care provider or specialist, as the revisions and updates are tremendously helpful for all to maintain their currency in medical care.
Features: The book begins with a "Year in Review" section that outlines updates of 185 specific diagnoses, details the medical advancements, and lists the reference the recommendation is based on. The subsequent chapters are generally divided in traditional body systems, but also have separate chapters on peri-operative management, geriatric disorders, disorders of hemostasis, thrombosis and antithrombotic therapy, and integrative medicine. Each chapter includes specific topics, such as asthma under the pulmonary disorders chapter and pill-induced esophagitis under the gastrointestinal chapter. Under each topic there are sections labeled General Principles/Considerations, Clinical Findings, Special Examinations, Treatment, Prognosis, and When to Refer. Selected relevant references follow each topic. Many chapters and topics have full color photographs that are well produced, with many tables and "Essentials" detailing the information.
