Description: This is a concise, at your fingertips, reference for screening, prevention, and management of common chronic diseases. It is divided into these three sections, focusing on management recommendations from the various medical societies and task force committees. The book is meant to serve as a very quick reference and it does not provide a great deal of detail, but there are plenty of references! This edition has several revised and new recommendations since the previous edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick and comprehensive reference for evidence-based guidelines in primary care topics for both the ambulatory and inpatient primary care settings. This book lives up to its intended purpose/objective and serves as a quick "grab from the shelf" resource during any busy ambulatory clinic.
Audience: The intended audience is essentially any primary care providers, ranging from undergraduate medical students, to graduate medical residents, to midlevel providers and seasoned clinicians. The book also includes guidelines from several primary care specialties such as internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. Review of this book does provide a very expansive and inclusive range of current evidence-based guidelines and recommendations that would serve well in any primary care setting. The authors are primarily from the Ventura County Medical Center, David Geffen School of Medicine, and the Ventura County Family Medicine Residency Program. The authors range from clinical instructors to associate clinical professors.
Features: This book covers a wide range of topics related to screening, prevention, and management of common chronic diseases evaluated and treated in the ambulatory and inpatient primary care settings. Each of the three chapters is devoted to one of these three topics, and then subdivided into chronic diseases listed in alphabetical order. Each chronic disease recommendation begins with the designation of the intended population, followed by the recommendations with designations and the years when each society or task force made the recommendation, and the primary sources associated with the recommendations. The format is deliberate and easy to follow once the reader gets the hang of it. Due to the complexities of the different populations involved in disease recommendations, there does seem to be some redundancy which can, at times, be difficult to sift through. Throughout the book, tables and algorithmic diagrams provide clear and quick references for step-wise treatment. Unfortunately, these tables do not always appear to correlate with the topic in the location in the book or are not demarcated well (i.e. hypertension in the management chapter). Additional shortcomings of the book are that many of the task force designations are abbreviated and may not be familiar to all readers. It would be helpful if there was a table to delineate all of the acronyms! Lastly, it can take some time to sort through the recommendations to find the correct population. It may be helpful to provide an electronic and searchable version of the book in the future.
Assessment: Overall, this is a comprehensive, evidence-based book of guidelines on chronic disease screening, prevention, and management in the primary care setting. Its breadth and the inclusion of recommendations from various task forces and medical societies make this a one-stop shop for any medical providers, ranging from undergraduate medical students, to residents, to interdisciplinary teams and seasoned clinicians. The 2017 update is necessary to reflect the rapidly changing, evidence-based guidelines that dictate ambulatory primary care.
