Economist Guttmann (Hofstra Univ.) examines the impact of recent technological innovations on money. He explains that the technology needed for a revolution in the way money is used and created now exists in the form of electronic transfer systems, computer databases, smart cards, ATMs, and the Internet. E-commerce, he argues, will spur the development of cybercash, which he defines as funds created and circulated over the Internet. After chronicling recent attempts at creating cybercash (e.g., barter systems, e-mail transfers, and coupon money), Guttmann predicts that within a decade varying forms of electronic money will largely replace paper currency and that banking activities, such as the creation of money, will move to those who operate on the borderless Internet.
