About the Author

Dr. Cibas holds a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed a residency in pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a fellowship in cytopathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is board-certified in anatomic pathology and cytopathology. He has been recognized for his work as an educator with an Excellence in Education Award from the American Society of Cytopathology.
Dr. Ducatman is president of the Association of Pathology Chairs and sits on international, national, state and organizational committees. She also worked at Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Ducatman was a lieutenant commander for the U.S. Public Health Service from 1992-1996 and a lieutenant commander for the U.S. Navy from 1983-1986.

Description: This fairly concise review of the entire field of diagnostic cytology includes black-and-white and color photomicrographs as well as summary tables.
Purpose: Although there is now an abundance of textbooks and monographs in the field of cytology, a few try to cover the entire subject in a succinct manner. This book covers not only traditional exfoliative and aspiration cytology, but also newer diagnostic techniques, such as immunocytochemistry and molecular biology.
Audience: This book is intended for a relatively broad audience, including practicing cytotechnologists and pathologists as well as those in training. For the most part, the authors are recognized experts in their fields.
Features: The photomicrographs are mostly in black-and-white. These images are interspersed in the body of the text. Many chapters also have a group of color plates at the end of the chapter. The overall quality of the images is good. There are a moderate number of pertinent recent references at the ends of the chapters. Most of these references have appeared in print in the last 10 years. The book is convenient to carry and read.
Assessment: This book represents a good general overview of the field of diagnostic cytopathology. There is enough information to make the book useful, but not so much that the reader is overwhelmed. This book would be a good choice for a resident doing a first rotation in cytology or for a general practitioner of pathology who would like to review the subject.
