The literature of dance is limited and made more so by the lack of bibliographic tools (indexes, bibliographies, dictionaries, etc.) to access it. Author Getz, founder-editor of the dance newsletter Attitudes and Arabesques, has made a useful contribution with this handy resource that will guide students, scholars, and librarians to biographical writings, interviews, and artist statements. The references include books, dissertations, and occasional publications dedicated to one individual, as well as chapters, essays, and articles in collections and scholarly journals. Ballet and modern dance are the focus and the cited titles are all 20th-century publications in the English language. Popular dance magazines, such as Dance Magazine, Dancing Times, Dance International, and Dance Australia, are largely excluded. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically by artist's name and, for the most part, the entries are not annotated. A selected list of general reference works, critical writings, and periodical histories rounds out the volume. This publication is an excellent starting point for research, but the serious student will understand the need to extend his or her investigations beyond its scope.
