Overview

The Supreme Restitution Court (Oberste Rückerstattungsgericht) in Herford was one of the key institutions and important components in the program to compensate for National Socialist injustices in Germany after the Second World War. As the supreme judicial authority for restitution matters in the territory of the former occupation zones for the three Western powers, it was assigned to make final decisions about all legal procedures related to the restitution of assets that had been seized or forcibly given away during the Third Reich “in the period from 30 January 1933 to 8 May 1945 for reasons of race, religion, nationality, ideology, or political opposition to National Socialism” (Article 1, Paragraph 1, page 1 USREG).
