Overview

Every time we google something, facebook someone, or just carry a phone, we create data. Yet, we do not benefit from this wealth of information as much as we should. Andreas Weigend-an advisor to Alibaba, BMW, Hyatt, MasterCard and Lufthansa, among others-wants to change that. In Data for the People, he proposes six basic data rights that we all need to make better decisions.

Big data is here to stay. The time has come to shift the balance of power back to the individual and find out how data is being used and what needs to change to make data work for you. Vital reading for anyone who owns a mobile phone, internet connection, or even a debit card, Data for the People puts the power of data back into our hands.

Library Journal - Audio

06/15/2017
Every time we conduct a web search, make an online purchase, or use a cell phone, we create a social data trail. Weigend, a former chief scientist at Amazon, sees this data collected across various platforms as essentially democratic in nature. It should be at the disposal of their creators. However, individuals fail to benefit from this information owing to a lack of access. Instead, data companies collect and mine this data for their own gain. Here, Weigend argues for a significant change in this imbalance. He believes that individuals should use this information for their own good. He advocates for the rights to inspect data-collecting companies to ensure transparency. In addition, the right to amend, blur, experiment with, and move data among different companies allows people to exercise some control over their social data. Reader Barry Abrams presents this story in an upbeat, breezy manner. VERDICT This audiobook will appeal to listeners concerned with the use of the data they create.—Stephen L. Hupp, West Virginia Univ. Parkersburg Lib.
