Description: Meant as a companion to the parent title by the same author, Davis's PA Exam Review: Focused Review for the PANCE and PANRE, 3rd edition (F. A. Davis, 2018), this book provides additional practice questions and answers for certification and recertification for the PA certifying exam, with topics that span the NCCPA blueprint.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide another resource for students and practicing physician assistants as they prepare for their PANCE or PANRE. The book has more than 1,500 questions and explanations for continued practice by students and licensed PAs. The questions are made to look like those seen on the certifying exam. It does meet the objectives - there can never be too many review questions.
Audience: The audience is students and practicing PAs. Dr. Diamond is an expert item writer for national certifying exams and has published three editions of the parent title.
Features: The book covers the main topics of the NCCPA blueprint and has concise explanations for the questions. The chapter breakdown is great, with a separate chapter for psychiatric/legal and ethics, which is new to the NCCPA blueprint. One area that could have been improved is the repetitive nature of some of the questions. For instance, in endocrinology, there are several questions about avoiding metformin in patients who have renal disease. Students and practitioners also may like to see slightly more detail in the explanations, especially when explaining why one answer may be wrong. Lastly, one section that several PA exam review books is lacking is pediatrics. Pediatric topics are intermingled in all the other chapters, but one specific pediatrics chapter (covering vaccines or developmental milestones or viral exanthems) might be helpful.
Assessment: Overall this book is very good. There is no such thing as too many books with review questions, and getting a different perspective is always great. In order to stand out more, this book could add a pediatrics section and maybe even a pharmacology section.
