Welcome to Fethering! Carole has a bad hair day when a haircut leads to murder in this quirky, cozy, British village mystery. The last thing Carole expects when she goes to Connie's Clip Joint for a trim is to find the body of Kyra, Connie's assistant, in the back room. Kyra's boyfriend, Nathan, has vanished, but his family, an eccentric, controlling bunch, don't seem overly concerned. Instead, they are bizarrely obsessed with a family board game which seems to provide a host of clues as to Nathan's whereabouts. Carole and her neighbour Jude are determined to unravel the clues, but can they discover the truth before either someone is falsely accused or the killer makes a second move? And how many haircuts can a pair of middle-aged sleuths have before people start to become suspicious?

About the Author

Simon Brett worked as a producer in radio and television before taking up writing full-time. He is the author of more than 100 books including the much-loved Fethering, Charles Paris, and Mrs Pargeter series, and the brand-new Decluttering mysteries. In 2014 he won the CWA's prestigious Diamond Dagger for an outstanding body of work, and in 2016 he was awarded an OBE for services to literature. He lives in an Agatha Christie-style village in the South Downs.

The popular and prolific Brett takes us into the world of cut, color and curl in his witty eighth Fethering cozy (after 2006's The Stabbing in the Stables). Carole Seddon needs a haircut: exactly the same, just shorter. She risks going to a salon in her small English town of Fethering, only to witness the discovery of the assistant, Kyra, strangled in the back room with evidence of a tryst all around her. When Kyra's secret boyfriend, Nathan, becomes the suspect, but his parents aren't worried, Carole decides the local constabulary needs help from her and her next-door neighbor and sleuthing partner, Jude. Brett perfectly describes the mannerisms of stuffy upper-middle-class Carole slowly letting her hair down; the odd, arty insouciance of Nathan's academic family; and anyone else who comes within range. This funny and intricately plotted story brims with affection for the affectations of our favorite Fethering friends. (Aug.)

When a teenager is murdered, Jude and Carole, Miss Marple clones, investigate. The village of Fethering is agog. Kyra, the shampoo girl at Connie's Clip Joint, lies dead, surrounded by beer and vodka bottles, cigarette butts and red roses. Her beau Nathan has scampered, and neighbors Jude Nichol and Carole Seddon (The Penultimate Chance Saloon, 2006, etc.) take it upon themselves to find him. The search will require many haircuts, some at Connie's place, some at the more successful salon chain owned by her ex-hubby Martin and his domineering Czech wife Martina. In between cut-and-sets, the gals run afoul of Nathan's nutty family, who are mad for anagrams and a game they call Wheel Quest. Meanwhile, there are hints of a sexual harassment suit to investigate; a trip to a Cornwall tin mine to undertake; and Carole's dog to be walked. Pub meetings are mandatory. Red herrings abound. At length (great length), matters are tied up cozily. Incomparably minor Brett, lacking the author's usual wit, and plodding along with the unfinished finesse of a much more modest talent.
