Description: This book is a collection of review articles about the physiological response to deconditioning due to bed rest, water immersion, or prolonged space flight and weightlessness. Information also is presented on reconditioning procedures to regain normal homeostasis.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to present a comprehensive review of the physiological responses and adaptations due to bed rest, water immersion, and space flight deconditioning and the impact of reconditioning on the return of the body systems to normal function and homeostasis. This book is a valuable contribution to the field. Each contributing author presents a comprehensive summary of the current state of knowledge regarding their specific topic. The book appears to meet the author's objectives.
Audience: The book is written for physicians, physiologists, exercise therapists and specialists, and all students of the exercise sciences who require information regarding the body's adjustments and adaptations to deconditioning and reconditioning. The author is a most credible authority and possesses a strong background and knowledge of the subject matter contained in the book.
Features: The book covers the deconditioning and reconditioning responses associated with the major physiological systems relating to physical activity. The heart, skeleton, and bone receive most of the attention in this book. The reviews dealing with cardiovascular, muscle, and bone changes with deconditioning and reconditioning are particularly well written. The book and more specifically the individual topic articles could contain more instructive illustrations and diagrams of the comprehensive system physiologic responses and adaptations.
Assessment: This book contain much useful information about the physiological deconditioning response associated with bed rest, prolonged water immersion, and prolonged space flight and weightlessness. The book is a good starting point for all students interesting in understanding where good health begins, i.e., being physically active. While other books in the field discuss the importance of physical activity to the maintenance of health and fitness, this book shows first the consequence of in-activity, i.e., deconditioning, and then discusses how reconditioning re-establishs health.
