Description: This is a study guide for the USMLE Step 2 CK written in a question-and-answer format. It has many things going for it, but it impressed me as a list of terms and facts that one must remember, without the supporting clinical relevance or associated physiology. The previous edition was published in 2008 and I had some difficulty finding changes from that version.
Purpose: The author recognizes the book's limitations, calling it a "high-yield resource, to endorse the rapid recall of the essential facts in a well-organized and efficient manner."
Audience: Although focused on those preparing for the USMLE, it does have some value for those who would like to refresh their memory of common terms, associations, and eponyms.
Features: The question-and-answer format is a reasonable approach to studying for exams. The index is comprehensive and helpful, but as in the first edition, the black-and-white pictures do not show the intended lesions well. Although there are no references, this is consistent with the intent of the book.
Assessment: This book does have the limited utility of presenting facts for memorization for the USMLE, but it is less useful for those who need to understand the physiology before memorizing simple facts.
