About the Author

John T. O’Brien is a professor of Old Age Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK.

David Ames is director, National Ageing Research Institute and professor of Ageing and Health within the University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry, Academic Unit for Psychiatry of Old Age.

Alistair Burns is professor of Old Age Psychiatry and vice dean for the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences at The University of Manchester, clinical director for the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) and an honorary consultant old age psychiatrist in the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust (MMHSCT).

This book on dementia incorporates the viewpoints of a variety of international experts and serves as a comprehensive survey of the current state of the field. The book's purpose is an attempt, in a single volume, to encompass all aspects of all types of dementia. According to the authors, because this is an expanding field, they attempted to concentrate on a ""solid core of information"" that is likely to remain part of the mainstream view of the field. The authors do not specifically mention who the intended target audience should be. The book would be useful to neurology and psychiatry residents, fellows in neuropsychiatry, behavioral neurology, geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, psychologists, and other practitioners who care for the elderly. The book contains 53 chapters and is divided into two parts focusing on dementia of the Alzheimer type and non-Alzheimer dementia. The book covers the clinical features, the natural history of Alzheimer dementia, etiology, diagnosis, neuroimaging, therapeutic strategies, services for demented patients, the vascular dementias, dementia in psychiatric syndromes, dementia in neurological syndromes, and recently described dementia such as dementia of the frontal lobe type. This is a very useful book for anyone who diagnoses and treats patients with dementia. It brings together internationally known experts in the field and gives a broad perspective in this multifaceted problem. This book fills a need for a comprehensive textbook on this subject. I highly recommend it.
