Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education is a book by American philosopher and psychologist, John Dewey, first published in 1916. In this work, Dewey argues the case for the importance of education in society. It is not enough, he claims, that younger members of a group master the basic necessities of subsistence, but that they should also be taught and initiated into the interests, purposes, information, skill, and practices of the mature members who possess the knowledge and customs needed for their characteristic lives to continue.
