Demon By Knight
"Demon by Knight", by David W. Gray is one of those books that will surprise you, time and time again. Even after reading the introduction and skimming a few chapters before really settling into the meat and bones of the story, I was pleasantly surprised at the way the book flowed from one unexpected turn to another. From the opening scene where you meet David Asher, the no-account miscreant who assaults an elderly woman for the change in her purse to score a good high, to the climactic battle between the good demons (servants of the gods) and the outcasts (those who have invaded earth to take advantage of humanity's weaknesses), the action is nonstop.

At the beginning of this tale, the young David Asher is an angry and abused young man; angry at the loss of both his parents, and his grandmother (the only person he remembered being loved by his whole life), and abused by pedophiles, priests and drug pushers alike as he struggles to survive in the hostile streets of New York. In his desperation to escape the Hell of his existence, Asher succumbs to the same vices of those who use him to sate their own dissatisfied souls. After he leaves the old woman bloodied and unconscious on the rain-dampened sidewalk, David Asher is struck by a bus, and his contemptible soul is judged before the Collective. The Collective (a group of arguably indifferent gods) decide that due to his own struggles and his youthfulness, the soul of David Asher will be condemned to a term of service as their own Vengeful Hand of Death, whereupon if he proves deserving he will be granted a second chance at life.

He awakens to find he is no longer David Asher, but an as yet nameless demon, a monstrous figure of a predatory cat; he is deep within the realm of a warrior class of demons who have been chosen (or punished as may be) to carry out the bidding of the gods - to maintain the ever precarious balance between good and evil among the people of earth. While his soul struggles to find meaning as a demon, David Asher's body lies comatose in the same hospital as the woman whom he attacked that fateful night. Somehow, the lessons his demon tutors pound into his stubborn soul, and the love the recovered woman bestows upon the poor, misunderstood boy who nearly killed her, begin to reshape David's views on life and humanity.

Demon by night, crippled teen by day, David (christened "Blood Bath" by the demons after his rapid ascent to prominence as the gods' Hand of Death) is torn between the camaraderie and sense of purpose (and just a little budding romance between another, surprisingly feminine member) of his fellow demons, and the newfound love and understanding of his intended victim, the woman who would now accept him as her own son. The gods too become hesitant to relinquish their hold upon David's soul as they witness the continual successes of their new champion in ever more violent and urgent assignments to fight the growing evils among Earth's human population.

"Demon by Knight" crosses great philosophical and moral barriers in search of a soul, 0f purpose, goodness and love... and redemption. This is a fabulous story, the work of a terrific mind that has known its share of horrors as well as human kindness. The depth and imagination of David Gray's words will inspire you to renewed confidence in mankind, and cause you to look a little deeper into the lives of those around you. If you haven't read this book yet, consider this your second chance!
