Description: The authors present a thorough review of the psychopharmacologic and psychotherapeutic management of major depression. Special emphasis is given to combining medications and combining medications and psychotherapy.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an updated and comprehensive review of all aspects of treating major depression.
Audience: It is meant for a fairly broad audience — basically anyone involved in treating those with psychiatric illness. This includes psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, nurse practitioners, psychologists, social workers and primary care doctors who manage psychiatric illness.
Features: The book is very evidence-based. It is separated into acute and long term/maintenance treatments. Chapters are further organized into the type of study, i.e., observational, noncontrolled, and placebo-controlled, etc. This makes for a very comprehensible overview of the literature. Unfortunately, there are no illustrations.
Assessment: I found the book to be a nice balance between a review of what the evidence shows and practical advice and suggestions based on that review. It also focuses on difficult to treat cases, situations where combining medications or trying newer somatic therapies might be in order. I particularly liked when authors attempted to criticize the studies (instead of just summarizing them). Although probably not groundbreaking, the book is a very digestible review of what is considered state-of-the-art in the management of major depression.
