Am 25. Februar 1815 fuhr der Dreimaster Pharao langsam und wie zögernd in den Hafen von Marseille. Eine Trauerwolke schien das Schiff zu umschweben. Gespannt folgte eine schaulustige Menge allen Bewegungen des Fahrzeugs und bemerkte bei dessen Näherkommen, daß es von einem auffallend jungen und wohlgestalten, dabei aber anscheinend ebenso tatkräftigen wie geschickten Manne gelenkt wurde.
