About the Author

Dr. Julian Trevino obtained his bachelor’s degree from Trinity University (Texas) and his medical degree from Wright State University School of Medicine. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology, Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University, Dayton, OH, USA. He is also the Program Director for the Wright State University Dermatology Residency Program and Chief of the Dermatology Section, Dayton Veteran Affairs Medical Center. He is certified by the American Board of Dermatology in both General Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology. In addition, he is an active member of various dermatologic organizations, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the Association of Professors of Dermatology, the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, the American Dermatological Association and the Ohio Dermatological Association. His clinical interests include immunobullous disorders and skin conditions resulting from plant and arthropod exposures.

Dr. Amy Chen obtained her bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine.  After finishing a clinical trials fellowship at the Department of Dermatology, Wright State University School of Medicine, she went on to complete her dermatology residency there, where she also served as the chief resident. Dr. Chen is a founding partner of Central Connecticut Dermatology.  Dr. Chen is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. Dr. Chen’s clinical interests include complex medical dermatology, rheumatologic dermatologic diseases, autoimmune blistering disorders, and general dermatology.

Description: It is important for dermatologists to be able to identify plants and bugs that are responsible for contact dermatitis and bites. This book discusses the various skin reactions that may occur upon exposure to such flora and creatures. There are color photographs of many plants and bugs, sometimes accompanied by the ensuing dermatitis that occurs with exposure.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach doctors, medical students, and other members of the primary care team how to recognize insects and plants that can cause skin problems.
Audience: The audience is doctors, medical students, and other medical personnel.
Features: The educational material could be expanded to include more photographs of the plants and insects discussed as well as the anticipated skin reaction. Not every entity mentioned is accompanied by photographs, but those that are have added educational value. The book describes characteristics of specific plants and insects and reviews pertinent laboratory evaluation, complications, and treatments. In the case of plants, cross reactivity to other plants in the plant family are mentioned.
Assessment: This manual is a useful introduction to acquainting oneself with basic plant and arthropod cutaneous hazards. Since most dermatology training includes limited teaching on botany and entomology, the next edition should expand on pictorial education that focuses on these goals. Recognition by photograph is invaluable, as diagnoses are not discernable by only reading text. More photographs of the cutaneous reactions would also enhance readers' understanding of naming plants and culprit bugs brought into the office by patients.
