After twenty-five centuries, Buddhism continues to inspire individuals from diverse spheres of society, including secular and nonreligious. Stephen Batchelor has taken upon himself the task of secularizing Buddha’s original teachings, developing a philosophical, ethical, and contemplative vision of Buddhism more compatible with current times. Drawing from critical readings of canonical texts, Batchelor characterizes Buddha’s teaching as pragmatic rather than dogmatic.
