Overview

This comprehensive study of the developmental biology of the ocular lens will serve as a reference for graduate students and research scientists in the visual sciences and developmental biology, as well as for ophthalmologists. Clarification of the mechanisms that govern normal lens development is fundamental to our understanding of lens disorders. The lens has also become a model for studying more complex organ systems. Leading experts in lens development and structure discuss lens induction, evolution, cell cycle regulation, morphology, fiber cell differentiation, and regeneration.

About the Author

Frank J. Lovicu is a Senior Lecturer at the Save Sight Institute and in the Department of Anatomy and Histology, Institute for Biomedical Research, at the University of Sydney, Australia. He currently heads the Lens Research Laboratory in the Department of Anatomy & Histology, where he studies the role of growth factors in regulating normal and aberrant lens cell behavior.

Michael L. Robinson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University, USA. He also heads the Transgenic and Embryonic Stem Cell Core Facility at Columbus Children's Research Institute. Dr Robinson's research is focused on the role of FGF receptor signaling during lens fiber cell differentiation.
