Description: This book explores the issues in developmental biology that are relevant in the elucidation of the neoplastic process and its possible control. More attention is devoted to the description of cancer biology than is spent in the description of developmental processes.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide developmental biologists with a basic understanding of the disease process of cancer, with particular attention paid to those areas that overlap with developmental biology.
Audience: The primary audience is the developmental biologist seeking information about cancer; the secondary audience is the basic scientist involved in cancer research seeking information about development in its relationship to cancer. This book targets both audiences well.
Features: The illustrations are black-and-white and are well presented and well described. The text is well organized, combining two seemingly diverse fields by first presenting the basics of cancer and development and finally illustrating how a failure of developmental organization may be a basis for neoplastic behavior. The references are appropriate and comprehensive, and the index is detailed and well organized.
Assessment: This text is very attractive and in general achieves its objectives. However, in some of the chapters, more space is devoted to the historical perspective of the field than is necessary.
