Description: This book discusses all aspects of diabetic neuropathy from the epidemiology to the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment. This third edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2007.
Purpose: Advances in diabetic neuropathy have progressed in the last couple of decades, and the book serves to summarize this complex topic. The authors clearly state that this disorder is very heterogeneous in presentation and the extent of neuropathy is very broad — ranging from classic peripheral neuropathy to cranial neuropathies and cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy.
Audience: The audience includes trainees and practitioners in primary care and endocrinology. In addition, many other specialties including podiatry, neurology, pain medicine may encounter patients with diabetic neuropathy. As such, the contributing authors represent experts in a wide range of fields.
Features: The chapters begin with an introduction and end with a thorough reference list. Each includes a table of studies and one or two diagrams either summarizing a molecular pathway, pathogenic mechanism, radiology, or histopathology. The content is not organized consistently, as some chapters discuss types of neuropathy and others cover diagnosis or treatment pathways. The chapter on lifestyle and dietary modification relevant to diabetic neuropathy is intriguing, especially as treatment options seem limited.
Assessment: Diabetic Neuropathy, Tavakoli (Elsevier, 2022) contains similar content to this book, but it is organized in a slightly different manner and includes a few additional topics such as the economic impact of this condition.
