Dr. Paloian is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric nephrology. Prior to joining the nephrology team at UW Health, he completed a fellowship at Seattle Children's Hospital and received his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School.
In addition to her position as an Assistant Scientist at the UW Medical School, Dr. Penniston is a Clinical Nutritionist with UW Hospital and Clinics and provides medical nutrition therapy to patients with urologic diseases, such as kidney stones, prostate cancer, and other urinary tract conditions. Dr. Penniston has been the nutritionist for the UW Hospital Metabolic Stone Clinic since 1999.

Description: This book covers pediatric nephrolithiasis. It gives a very elaborate and clear explanation of the risk factors, etiology, diagnostic evaluation, and management of kidney stone disease. Various chapters flow nicely from the pathophysiology, etiology, and clinical presentation to evaluation and management of the various types of renal stones.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to increase the understanding of recent developments in the field of nephrolithiasis in pediatrics. The authors emphasize the changing epidemiology, etiology, genetic developments, clinical presentation, and diagnostic evaluation. This book certainly achieves its goals of improving the understanding of the diagnosis and management of kidney stones in pediatrics. In addition, the chapter on the components of the multidisciplinary pediatric stone clinic is an essential takeaway, providing a template that deserves replication.
Audience: This is a great reference for medical students, residents, and pediatric nephrology and urology fellows. In addition, it has two fantastic chapters devoted to the nutritional risk factors and medical nutritional therapy, which will interest dietitians and nutritional scientists as well. It is a great resource for all learners.
Features: The book covers pediatric nephrolithiasis in 15 well-organized chapters, from epidemiology and pathophysiology to the genetic origins of kidney stone disease, aiding the current approach in the diagnosis of these disorders. The chapters on comorbid conditions and drug-induced nephrolithiasis have significant overlap/duplication and could easily have been merged. The chapters on the work-up and medical and surgical management are well written and provide a very good current strategy. I recommend all readers to pay special attention to the chapter on the role of multidisciplinary teams in the management of nephrolithiasis. The last two chapters on the association of obesity and cardiovascular disease are very interesting and enlightening as well. The book could have been easier to handle if it was offered in paperback.
Assessment: I enjoyed reading this book and consider it a very good resource for understanding a rather common, but complex and important disease. It is very easy to read and understand. The authors have certainly used up-to-date knowledge and references. There are not many books dedicated to this topic, but various nephrology and pediatric nephrology textbooks provide essential knowledge and information for learners.
