About the Author

Denise Crompton and her husband, Bob, are the parents of four children, the oldest of whom had the ultra-rare disease of Mucolipidosis III (ML III). In 2003 Denise authored Kelleys Journey: Facing a Rare Disease with Courage to share the Crompton familys experience with others who were facing the same challenges they had been dealing with for many years.
Ms. Cromptons background, while varied, has always included working with people. She worked in the nursing field before obtaining a degree in social work, which led her to working with special needs adolescents as counselor and job coach; parent aide; substance abuse counselor and owner/operator of a specialized bookshop in Nashua NH, working with local counselors to carry books they recommended. In addition she held a Real Estate Brokers license in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, where she worked as a Buyers Agent specialist.
Diagnosis: Rare Disease is the natural outgrowth of her expertise in caring for her daughter, searching for and finding help, never missing a day when she was hospitalized, and being on duty 24/7 for the last 5 years of her life, as her condition deteriorated until her death at the age of 45.
She has attended many conferences of rare disease groups, written numerous articles for their periodicals, and given a presentation to parents and doctors to assist in the development of positive relationships. For many years, she has corresponded with numerous other families, sharing their many trials and triumphs. Her desire is to help them, and all who suffer from rare diseases, by taking readers inside the very complicated world that a rare disease creates. She intends to donate most of her proceeds to medical research for rare diseases.
