Description: It is increasingly important for radiologists to understand liver transplantation and for transplant surgeons to understand the capabilities of the radiologists. This book is geared towards this bidirectional exchange of information. Although the title implies that the focus is radiology, half of the chapters are on surgical or endoscopic topics. This is not necessarily bad. Both imagers and interventional radiologists need to understand clinical aspects of transplantation to enhance image interpretation and allow effective consultation before interventions.
Purpose: The authors' goal is to increase knowledge of surgical, diagnostic, and interventional techniques, thereby improving patient selection and the success of transplantation. This is an ambitious goal for a 300-page book. While the book certainly contains considerable information, it will be difficult to assess if the authors succeed in their stated goals.
Audience: The book appears to be targeted at practicing surgeons, hepatologists, and radiologists. Given the broad scope of liver transplantation, it is not surprising that some topics are covered superficially. Thus this book may be better suited as an overview for trainees. The chapters are well written although some of the authors have not published peer-reviewed papers on their chapter topic.
Features: The book is well organized and groups topics by the types of liver transplants (cadaveric vs. living donor, adult vs. pediatric). Since most of the authors are European, some of the techniques described (such as use of external ultrasound to guide needle passage during TIPS) are unique to European practitioners. There are some illustrations in which captions are incorrect or incomplete (failing to identify arrows on the image), but overall the illustrations are high quality images that nicely augment the text. Some of the chapters (e.g., the first chapter on liver anatomy) would have benefited from more illustrations. The references are generally good though somewhat dated (in some chapters, 1998 is the most current year of citation) considering the many recent advances in imaging and intervention.
Assessment: This is a nice overview that integrates clinical, surgical, imaging, and interventional topics and it is the only book I know of that pulls together all these aspects of liver transplantation. The short length prevents some topics from being covered in great depth but, conversely, this is one book that can actually be read instead of sitting on a shelf and used only for reference.
