Description: This is the third edition of the gastrointestinal volume in the Diagnostic Pathology series and provides a comprehensive overview of gastrointestinal entities, from the esophagus to the anus. It includes updated AJCC cancer staging, the newest advances in precision medicine and targeted therapy, as well as developments in complex, newly described topics such as gastric polyposis and immune modulator therapy effect. The previous edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: This comprehensive textbook is meant for both trainees and practicing pathologists as a quick, concise reference with easy-to-read bullet points, clear images, and great organization. It covers challenging, complex topics in addition to all of the most common entities encountered in gastrointestinal pathology.
Audience: This reference is intended for pathologists of all levels of experience as well as trainees interested in reviewing and learning gastrointestinal pathology.
Features: The book is divided into seven sections: esophagus, stomach, small intestine, appendix, colon, anus, and multiple organs. Each section is further divided into non-neoplastic and neoplastic. Title pages list the entities that will be discussed in the section and, in addition to the index, are an easy way to locate specific entries. Each condition is described in a concise outline including clinical context, pathogenesis, immunohistochemical stains, prognosis, and differentials, in addition to microscopic and macroscopic features. There are numerous high-quality images with descriptive annotations.
Assessment: This is a well-organized, easy-to-read reference that can be readily used in sign-out or for studying purposes. It provides a comprehensive overview of both common and uncommon entities seen in gastrointestinal pathology. The histologic and gross images are high quality with descriptive annotations and symbols that highlight key features. Immunohistochemical stains are provided within a clear table that includes staining patterns as well as helpful comments about specificity and indications. Diagnostic checklists highlight key pathologic features and interpretation pearls, and the differentials provide succinct but notable differences that help tremendously in diagnostic interpretation and workup. An easy-to-use online version is available for those who prefer reading electronically. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to study or needs a refresher on gastrointestinal pathology.
