About the Author

Carol Rumack, MD, is Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado, School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado. She is widely published, and her research centers on neonatal sonography of high risk infants, particularly the brain. Dr Rumack is gradually transitioning off the project and the lead editor on the revision will be Dr Deborah Levine.

Deborah Levine, MD, is Vice Chair of Academic Affairs in the Department of Radiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr Levine’s clinical experience is in obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound, and her research is focused on fetal MRI imaging. She is an American College of Radiology Chancellor, Chair of the American College of Radiology Commission on Ultrasound, and a fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and the Society of Radioloigists in Ultrasound.

Description: This two-volume book covers all aspects of diagnostic ultrasound. The previous edition was published in 2005.
Purpose: According to the authors, the goal is to "continue to be the most comprehensive reference book available in the sonographic literature with a highly readable style and superb images." This edition updates more than half of the images and includes a major overhaul of other sections, particularly the one on obstetrics and gynecology. This edition has over 2,000 pages of detailed yet readable information on all aspects of ultrasound.
Audience: The intended audience is "practicing physicians, residents, medical students, sonographers, and others interested in understanding the vast applications of diagnostic sonography in patient care." However, this book is at the higher end of complexity and, as such, is most appropriate for practicing radiologists, fellows, and senior residents. It would be information overload for junior residents and overkill for medical students. Sonographers may benefit, as each chapter contains sonographic technique and anatomy sections.
Features: In a nutshell, this book covers everything. It is divided into five parts and works its way through every body part in the fetus, child, and adult. Radiology books can never have too many images and this one delivers, with over 5,000. New to this edition are video clips, 242 in total, which readers can access at the publisher website. All topics are covered in phenomenal detail.
Assessment: No other book comes close to the breadth of information this book contains and it continues to be the tome for this modality. There have been huge advances in many areas of ultrasound since the 2005 edition was published, necessitating this update. This book continues to be the leading reference for all things ultrasound, and should be a staple in every ultrasound department.
