Nordstrom has done a creditable job in compiling this dictionary. There are imbalances and omissions, some excusable in a first-time, massive compendium. As a reference volume for libraries the Dictionary has considerable utility, particularly for those seeking information on the more recent history of the five Nordic countries. It covers political and royal personages quite well, except for a vacuum on Iceland; social leaders are mostly absent except for women of note. Momentous events relating to political movements, newspapers, economic trends and organizations, and social trends should have been more detailed.
