Description: This book is designed to direct the evaluation and methods of care for a wide range of common musculoskeletal and visceral complaints chiropractors frequently see in their offices. Each of the 55 chapters covers basic context, relevant anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, summaries of conditions, and algorithms in the form of flowcharts. The previous edition was published in 2009.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide chiropractors and chiropractic students a way to quickly evaluate complaints using evidence-informed best practices. With the current direction of healthcare, there is more emphasis on the use of evidence to inform care. This book meets the author's objective to provide the most up to date information in a clinically relevant way while also providing a tool to continue to develop the clinician's ability to read and understand research.
Audience: This book targets chiropractic students and licensed chiropractors. As a licensed chiropractor with over 25 years of teaching experience, Dr. Souza is considered an expert.
Features: No other book on the market focuses on chiropractic evaluation and management. The combination of algorithms and summaries in this book allows clinicians to quickly review history, examination procedures, and basic treatment recommendations. To help clinicians stay current on research, Dr. Souza provides monthly video updates. This book is also a valuable resource for chiropractic faculty, providing instructors with access to learning objectives, PowerPoint presentations, and image banks. There are only two shortcomings. The first is the location of the discussion of how to incorporate evidence into practice. With the increased emphasis on the use of evidence in healthcare, this information is extremely valuable for clinicians and it should have a dedicated space at the front of the book, rather than in an appendix. The second is the lack of an online edition. Many clinicians and students prefer to load books onto their electronic devices for easy portability and better viewing of images or recordings.
Assessment: This edition should be in the library of every chiropractor and chiropractic student. It continues to provide the most up-to-date information on common conditions, but it also goes a step further, introducing how to use evidence in everyday practice and provides clinical summaries of the orthopedic literature. It is a clinically pertinent book that is easy to read and incorporate into daily use.
