Description: This reference is unique in addressing both the surgical and medical management of diseases affecting the colon. Chapters are written by both gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons and cover a wide array of colorectal disorders.
Purpose: The book emphasizes the in-depth collaboration between gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons that successful management of colonic diseases requires. To provide viewpoints from different allied specialties, the chapters are for the most part coauthored by at least one surgeon and one gastroenterologist. This mixture highlights the often differing emphasis that each specialty brings to patient care. This unique approach results in a truly comprehensive overview of colonic diseases.
Audience: It is aimed at internists, gastroenterologists, general and colorectal surgeons, as well as residents and fellows in these disciplines. The editors and authors are credible authorities and hail predominantly from the U.S. with a scattering of contributors from Israel, Europe, and Brazil.
Features: The 36 comprehensive chapters are grouped into different parts. These include an excellent chapter on colonic development, embryology, structure, and function as well as parts on functional disorders and diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic techniques. Further sections focus on infectious, vascular, motor, and neoplastic disorders. Other sections deal comprehensively with inflammatory (noninfectious) bowel disease and anorectal disorders. The book concludes with a discussion of the colon and systemic disease as well as the effect of medications on the colon. The interdisciplinary nature of the book is its main strength. I particularly appreciated the sections on anorectal physiology testing and endoanal and endorectal ultrasound.
Assessment: This is a useful contribution to the field with its particular strength being the emphasis on the collaborative nature of medical and surgical management of disease. The book is unique in this respect.
