The book provides an introduction to the disease process and basic information on common diseases of the human body. Diseases are largely organized by systems of the body. They are described in terms of common characteristics, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment, prognosis, and prevention. The purpose is to provide clear and accessible information on common diseases of the human body. The focus is on diseases that are commonly diagnosed and treated in the medical office or clinical setting. The book is targeted for allied health care providers and other medical office personnel. Many of the case study questions at the end of the chapters are written from the point of view of the medical assistant. Several illustrations of the structures of the human body are included in the front section of the book. These are clear and easy to reference. There is a glossary of medical terms that will be handy for the student. The appendix of diagnostic procedures will serve as an appropriate reference for any person working in a medical setting. Other features include appendixes of associations concerned with diseases of the human body and normal reference laboratory values. This book provides essential information on many common diseases. Most entries are covered in one page or less. The information is presented in a clear, logical, organized fashion. The book is easy to read and reference.

Purpose: According to the authors, this book is carefully designed to meet the unique educational and professional needs of healthcare personnel. It also proves to be a valuable resource in libraries.
Audience: Written primarily for students and professionals in the ambulatory care setting, this book would be a valuable resource for all students and professionals in the healthcare arena. The authors are experts in their fields.
Features: The book can be broken down into two sections. The first contains seven chapters devoted to the disease process itself and its adjuncts including allopathic and common homeopathic treatments, pain and pain management, and infectious disease. The second section focuses on major disease conditions by body system with each disease condition systematically highlighted by description, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment (including common homeopathies), prognosis, and prevention. The layout of each chapter is both innovative and outstanding, beginning with a chapter outline, keywords and pronunciation, and a list of learning objectives. Within each chapter, topics and subtopics are color coded. Teaching Tips factoids within the chapters add interest to the reading. Tables and anatomical graphics appropriate to the topic aid in student understanding. Each chapter concludes with several case studies and review questions.
Assessment: This fourth edition proves itself a worthy successor to the earlier editions. It takes the very complicated subject of disease and breaks it down to its various entities and therapies in a very student-friendly format. This is a highly recommended resource for health professionals in all fields and for all institutions which teach allied health professions.
