Description: This book is a publication on hair and nail problems that provides a solid foundation for mastering diagnosis and treatment of what can be challenging conditions. Each chapter begins with an outline and summary of the most important points.
Purpose: Hair and nail disorders can be tricky to diagnose because the fundamentals in establishing cognitive acumen are sometimes given scant emphasis in dermatology residency. This reference more than fills that gap in knowledge.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists in training and dermatologists in practice.
Features: The book teaches how to evaluate hair loss by taking a thorough history. The questions' purposes are explained, and how to distinguish between certain diseases through focused history taking is emphasized. The book might benefit by expanding the already excellent content by providing more detailed photos of characteristic hair roots found in different diseases upon a diagnostic hair pull. It was hard to find a picture of an anagen hair. Dermoscopy images of scarring alopecia illustrating the findings discussed in the text would also add to the educational value.
Assessment: The writing is crisp and clear, and the photography is outstanding. The diagnostic pearls shared by the author are invaluable; Dr. Tosti has that rare gift of being able to teach how to tackle hair and nail problems without being overly pedantic and boring. Thoughtful discussions on hair and nail anatomy help us understand how different diseases cause the changes observed clinically. This book removes the frustration that stems from not knowing what to do when we encounter these patients. I recommend any book of which Dr. Tosti is the author.
