Description: This is a concise review of common respiratory illnesses that are encountered by primary care physicians in daily practice. The algorithms, tables, and diagrams are useful in identifying key points.
Purpose: A primary care physician sees several patients every day with respiratory diseases. Many of these diseases have nonspecific signs and symptoms. The author has tried to provide a systematic approach to the common problems along with descriptive diagrams and algorithms. The book aims to improve diagnostic skills and knowledge base in respiratory medicine, leading to improved patient care. The book meets its worthy objectives.
Audience: The book is intended for primary care physicians, but it could also benefit residents and medical students during their primary care or pulmonary rotations. The author is a credible authority.
Features: An overview of basic anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract and a general approach to respiratory problems begins the book. It then covers all the important topics from asthma and COPD to lung cancer and sarcoidosis. Pulmonary function testing, sleep apnea and obesity related problems, and vocal cord dysfunction are covered very well. The chapter on pulmonary embolism is also very comprehensive. The evidence-based approach helps clinicians make the right decision for the individual patient. The algorithms and diagrams are of good quality.
Assessment: This is a good reference on respiratory disorders for busy primary care physicians. The topics are covered well and the information can be easily applied in the clinical setting. The book is concise compared to others, but is comprehensive enough in covering all important topics. This will be a very useful resource for primary care providers.
