"O'Dell. Eden O'Dell." She offered her hand, but he stepped back. "No need to shake hands. I know who you are. I thought you'd be more muscular ... sturdy."
"Sturdy? I might be small, but ..." She hid her hand behind her back. "Have no worries about my skills. I can turn a grown man over on a sickbed."
"A grown man, huh! We don't get sick men. We get broken, bloody, wounded men. I'll take your bag." He reached for the valise, but she jerked backward, bucking his command. "No, I must carry my books ... my things."
She was too slight to withstand this climate. Her hardheadedness also meant she would not follow his rules.
He had enough disobedient men to deal with, he did not need an educated know-it-all mucking up his plans. As soon as she patched up Bart's wounds, he would send this frozen milquetoast packing back to her gilded city life.
"Time's precious. You're nearly barefoot in those dainty shoes. The snowdrift outside might as well be a mountain."
"Not barefoot." Her sealskin boots did little to protect her burning toes. Fearing chilblains, she quivered. "These boots came from Bloomingdale's."
Her indignation proved her rebelliousness, but he could not stop his sneering grin. "Lady, I don't care where you bought what you wear on your feet. You won't travel a yard in those booties. Not unless you want rotting, frost-bitten stumps in the morning."
