Overview

The notion that it takes pain to create great art is a lie that has done more harm to artists than good. That said, it's true that a lot of fine songs have been inspired by heartbreak, as relatable a form of emotional ache as anyone can name. Along with a variety of global chaos that occurred in 2020, Matt Scottoline of the great pop band Hurry found himself struggling with the end of a long-term relationship that year, and the experience set the stage for his group's 2023 album Don't Look Back, a set of songs that charts the depths of rejection and the highs of finding new love. It's a subject as old as pop music itself, but not so many acts have written about it with the intelligence and honesty that Scottoline brings to these ten songs, and he's set them to a set of bittersweet melodies and jangly guitars that should win over anyone who knows how a great hook and a good cry can go together. Opening one's heart without suggesting a certain amount of self-pity is one of the risks of making an album like this, but on Don't Look Back, Scottoline is clearly aware of how much blame there is to go around and what was his fair share, and his sadness isn't treacly, it bears the ring of honesty and truth, and the clarity is effective. Along with a batch of great songs, Don't Look Back finds Hurry in excellent form in the studio; Scottoline and his bandmates (lead guitarist Justin Fox, bassist Joe DeCarolis, and drummer Rob DeCarolis) fill the performances with great rock & roll energy and impressive instrumental interplay, and engineer and co-producer Ian Farmer is equally adept at documenting the crunch and sparkle of the guitars. If the phrase "power pop" sounds limiting to some, Scottoline and Hurry remind us how much you can say when you put those ingredients together, and Don't Look Back is their strongest, most resonant album to date. ~ Mark Deming
