CHAPTER 1

YOU ARE IT

There is only one you in all space and time.

Think about that for a minute....

There are just over 7 billion people on this planet.

AND THERE IS ONLY ONE YOU.

No one else has your exact set of experiences, talents, insights, desires, fingerprints ... or dreams.

Overwhelming, isn't it? And also, very interesting.

Why would every human on this planet be different from all other humans?

Here's my theory. In the overall plan of the evolution of mankind and life on planet Earth, every single one of us is needed. Each of us is here for a purpose. We all play a unique part in life (even if we don't know what it is.)

The part we are here to play tries time and time again to get our attention through our DREAMS. Not those blurry visions that come to us as we sleep. But those that seem to squiggle around inside of us and keep showing up when we are daydreaming. The visions that make us feel warm and fuzzy inside or fired up and inspired. The ideas that when they pop up, we say, "Wouldn't that be so cool!"

Your dreams are incessantly tapping you on the shoulder, nudging you spiritually and emotionally. Your inner voice is encouraging you to live as you know, deep down inside, that you can. It is saying, "Remember I am here. I am always right here inside of you. I want to come true for you! It's our time!"

Those feelings are telling you there is something inside of you, calling out to you, asking you to GO FOR IT! Go Ahead. Listen.

IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY — AND YOUR HONOR — TO FOLLOW YOUR INNER GUIDANCE AND GO FOR YOUR DREAMS.

AND IT IS YOUR PATH TO SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS.

I bet you are feeling a bit challenged right now. I hope so.

The spark inside you deserves your attention. And the world deserves — and needs — for you to go for your dream.

Keep reading and let me help you turn that spark into a flame.

You are not defined by what you are given at birth. Success and happiness are not genetically transmitted attributes. Yes, your genes may define certain physical attributes like hair and eye color, height and general stature. But genetics do not place limits on the human spirit, the power of your will, or your ability to achieve. And those are the priceless tools you use to design your life. You will accomplish great things if you have the right environment that nurtures your dreams — not the right genes.

* * *

At eight years old, Derek Jeter decided he wanted to play short stop for the New York Yankees. In his biography, The Life You Imagine, he tells how he thought about it, dreamt about it and visualized it. When he announced his intention to his parents, they told him he could do it, but he would have to work hard at it for a very long time.

Jeter's parents did not give him the "why nots." They did not tell him he was too skinny and not very big. They did not tell him that no one in his bloodline has ever played professional sports. Instead, they nurtured his dream, added fuel to his desire, and gave him a simple formula to make it happen — work hard.

And that is just what he did. When he was a senior in high school, Jeter weighed in at 155 pounds. Not exactly the size you would expect to make it in the major league. Yet he worked and worked and worked. At 18, ten years after he began working to live his dream, Jeter was drafted by his dream team. Two years later, he made it to the big show. And 18 years later, he is playing for the same team.

And he is still working hard. Now, at 38, he is hitting harder and running faster than he has in years. Because his burning desire was nurtured, he is still living his dream.

* * *

In his book, The Biology of Belief, cellular biologist Bruce Lipton blows the "you are your genes" theory to smithereens. In his research, he uncovered something interesting.

Your genes are activated or made dormant by your environment.

Through the research of Dr. Lipton, stunning new discoveries have been made about the interaction between your mind and body and the processes by which cells receive information. It shows that genes and DNA do not control our biology; that instead DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our thoughts.

You have the genes to succeed. All you need is people and environments that nurture you, train you, teach you and believe in you, and your talent will fully express itself.

Alice in Wonderland

"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?" asked Alice

"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the cat.

"I don't much care where," said Alice

"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the cat.

Dreams fuel revolutions and evolution. They change the world and create worlds we never thought possible. Everything that has ever been created began as a spark of inspiration. If something has not been dreamed about — it will not come about.

CHAPTER 2

DREAM BIG

Do you care how your life turns out?

I ask every person who I coach, teach, nurture or present this question. Why? Because if you care, even the tiniest bit, you are a dreamer. If you have someplace you want to get in life, something you want to experience, something you want to achieve, you are already exercising your power to dream. By knowing you want to get somewhere that is not "HERE," you are embarking on the path of having those dreams come true.

There is another part to the equation: you can't get THERE unless you know where THERE is.

How well do you know what you want? Can you see it, feel it, taste it? Is your dream mushy or full of muscle? If someone asks you what you want, can you give them a ten word answer that makes you smile and stand a little taller — and makes them say "Wow?"

Once you can state your dream that clearly, and with certainty and enthusiasm, you will find that all sorts of support, from expected and unexpected places, will begin to show up in your life! You will naturally begin to draw to you what you need to make your dream real.

In fact, once you discover and define your dream, put it front and center in your life, engage it fully and consistently take inspired action that supports your dream — YOU become unstoppable and your dream will become REAL.

One more thing. It takes the same amount of energy to make every dream come true. That's right. No matter what size your dream is, it will take the same amount of energy, focus, and action to make it real. The difference size makes is in the duration of the energy, focus, and action you will put in to keep that particular dream going.

Remember Derek Jeter? He had a BIG DREAM, a really BIG DREAM. He made it REAL. Today he is still applying his energy and focus, and taking action (working hard) to keep the dream alive. Now, if his dream had been to play baseball while in high school (let's call it his "little dream"), he would have had to apply the same amount of hard work to make his little dream real. But once he reached his little dream goal (playing baseball in high school), he was already in motion and had built confidence. That momentum and confidence propelled him forward to his BIG DREAM (playing for the Yankees in the majors).

This is a vitally important point.

It takes as much energy, focus and action to manifest a little dream as it does to manifest a BIG DREAM. The difference is how long you maintain the energy, focus and actions toward that particular dream.

Since you are going to make your dream come true, you might as well DREAM BIG!

Ultimately, your BIG Dream becomes your life fulfilling task. The little dreams you create along the way become your BIG DREAM "to do" list. You get to have all your little dreams come true on the way to your BIG DREAM. How cool is that?

So, Dream Big! I DARE YOU!

Tell me my dreams are unrealistic and I will tell you your dreams are not big enough.

CHAPTER 3

I D.A.R.E. YOU !!!

Let's be clear!

I am officially issuing you a DARE!

I am DARING you to DREAM BIG!

Did you just feel your adrenaline kick in? Did the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? Did your breathing become shallower? That's what happens when you have been challenged.

Feels pretty good, doesn't it? Don't you feel more alive than you did a minute ago? Well, technically, you are more alive. Your autonomic response systems — your heart rate, breathing, brain activity, just increased several notches. You are more alert. Things around you are clearer and more distinct. You awareness is heightened. Every one of your senses is on high alert. Right now you could actually run a little faster than you usually do.

Or you can stand your ground and channel that expanded energy into making things happen. That is the choice you face right now. Take your stand and make things happen. Or run.

Wait a minute. Did a little voice inside of you just pipe up, telling you that dreaming big is selfish, greedy, egotistical and sure to set you on a path of self-destruction ... or disappointment? Is it telling you that dreams come true for other people, but not for you? Is it telling you that you do not deserve to have what you want?

If you heard that little voice, did you go from feeling hopeful and fired up to doubtful or afraid? One minute ago you were feeling more alive. And now you might be feeling guilty and defeated.

We humans are complex beings. We have many layers of response systems — both instinctual and learned — that face off inside of us every day. We often feel we are in a tug of war, playing a push-pull game between being all that we can be, and staying small so that we can stay safe in our comfort zone.

Hopefully, one day someone or something comes along and because of their or its influence, something inside of us shifts. We plant our feet on the ground and find the strength to pull our desire to have our dreams across the line and it becomes a bigger part of our life than our fears and doubts.

I want TODAY to be that day for YOU. Just think. You have waited a long time. And TODAY can be THAT DAY for you.

That is why I am DARING you.

By its most basic definition, a DARE is a challenge that allows you to access your courage. That is what a dare "is." And, you are going to need courage to make your dreams come true. More important than what a DARE is, is what a DARE "does."

A DARE (D.A.R.E.) presents you with an opportunity. It puts whatever you are being dared to do in your face, in an emotional way. It forces you to determine what matters most to you. It forces a choice, to either take it or leave it. When you make that choice, you know where you stand in relation to the topic of the dare.

By going through the process of evaluating a DARE, whether that takes a second or a month, you find out where you are willing to take a stand. This is very valuable information that you can use as you move forward along your life path.

In this regard, a DARE is a very important tool — a technology — that allows you to know yourself better.

When I DARE you to DREAM BIG, I am really asking you a very important question:

Are you willing to:

DO what it takes to

ALIGN your

REALITY with your

EXPECTATIONS

That's what the DREAM BIG Dare is all about. It is a way for you to (1) find out how you and your personal beliefs and philosophy of life line up with your dream and (2) gauge your level of desire to DO something about it. It is an exploration that allows you to assess your willingness in this moment. This is good news, very good news. Why?

Because you have the power to change your focus and your willingness at any time.

So let's use the DREAM BIG DARE to its full advantage, by looking at the individual exploration areas behind a DARE.

Do ... Align ... Reality ... Expectations

* * * When someone turns their dream into reality, we call them a hero. Heroes don't start out that way. They become heroes by how they respond to the hardships they encounter in life.

Helen Keller became deaf, dumb and blind shortly after birth. Despite this greatest misfortune, she has written her name indelibly in the pages of history as one who overcame adversity to become great. Her entire life has served as evidence that no one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as reality.

Beethoven was deaf. Milton was blind. But their names will last as long as time endures, because they dreamed and translated their dreams into organized thoughts that became timeless masterpieces.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream. That dream defined his entire life, inspired thousands and began a revolution that changed the world for the better.

Jim Carrey was completely broke and living in his car when he was just starting out in Hollywood. He decided to write himself a check for $10 million in 1985. He dated it Thanksgiving 1995 and noted at the bottom that it was "for acting services rendered." He carried that check with him in his wallet and looked at it every day. Six months before Thanksgiving 1995, he was paid $10 million for his work in the film Dumb and Dumber.

Nick Vajicic was unexplainably born without arms and legs, and life was an uphill battle. Life was so hard for him, he attempted suicide several times before he reached his teenage years. With the support of his loving, supportive family, and a strong Christian faith, he slowly began to focus on his abilities rather than his disabilities. One day, a janitor at his high school suggested that he begin speaking to others about his faith and overcoming adversity. He listened. He was inspired. He had found his purpose. By the age of 25, Nick had traveled to over 44 countries and given 2,000 motivational speeches. At 19, he started his first company, Attitude is Altitude. In 2007, he moved from his birthplace, Australia, to Los Angeles where he is CEO of the nonprofit company, Life Without Limbs. Today he inspires millions to go for their dreams and never give up, no matter what.

Bethany Hamilton was born to be a surfer. At eight years old, she entered her first surfing competition — and won. She could not imagine doing anything else. She was full steam ahead to live her dream — being a professional surfer. At 13, Bethany was attacked by a tiger shark and lost her left arm. Even with this devastatingly traumatic event, Bethany did not hesitate. One month after the event, Bethany was back in the water. Two months later, she entered her first competition. She placed fifth. One-year later, 14 year old Bethany won her first National Title. In 2007, three years after her injury, at the age of 17, Bethany turned pro. She continues to share her experiences through her autobiography, Soul Surfer, that has also been made into a major motion picture. She recently launched her own foundation, Friends of Bethany, dedicated to supporting shark attack survivors and traumatic amputees, and to inspiring others.

When I was a boy, I always saw myself as a hero in comic books and in movies. I grew up believing that dream.
