About the Author

G W A MILNE was a Senior Researcher at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, USA for 35 years where he worked on the use of spectroscopy for structure determination of organic compounds, and on molecular modeling in the design of drugs for the treatment of cancer and AIDS. From 1980 until 1998 he worked in molecular modeling and information technology at the National Cancer Institute, one of the NIH Institutes. He has been active for many years in the fields of chemical information and chemical computation and is the Editor of the American Chemical Society's Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Science and Gardner's Chemical Synonyms and Trade Names, Eleventh Edition (Ashgate).

Compiled by Milne, editor of the Journal of Chemical Information and Computer Sciences, this reference provides a classified arrangement of 10,000 drugs. Each entry includes the substance's molecular formula; its chemical, generic, and brand-name synonyms; and its manufacturer or supplier. There is a stronger emphasis on synonyms, with properties reported to a lesser degree. Melting and boiling points, optical rotation, density, UV absorption, solubility, and acute toxicity data are presented "whenever possible," but many of the entries lack such data. Each drug is classified into one or more of 204 therapeutic categories (which facilitates browsing for similar medications) and is listed by the most common name, usually the U.S. Adopted Name from the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). When available, the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number, European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number, and monograph number from the 12th edition of the Merck Index are also listed. Approximately 70 percent of the 14,000 drugs in the USP are included, and this second edition of Drugs adds 50 new entries since the first edition was published in 2000. Although going to the trouble to release a new edition with only .5 percent more content would seem to indicate a great concern for currency, some drugs still are not represented. (For example, Glimepiride, an antidiabetic approved by the FDA in 1995, does not appear in either edition.) This reference, therefore, seems most useful as an adjunct to other popular works, such as the Merck Index, the Physicians' Desk Reference, or the more advanced USP.
