Description: This book serves as a synopsis of the assessment and treatment of major child and adolescent psychiatric illnesses, guided by the most up-to-date evidence for each topic. This is the third edition, with the second edition published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to serve as a reference resource for those working in child and adolescent mental health care, as well as a core textbook for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows. These are worthy objectives and the book is needed as it provides a breadth of knowledge across several pertinent topics.
Audience: The author describes the audience as anyone working in child and adolescent mental health care including psychiatrists, pediatricians, social workers, therapists, neurologists, family physicians, etc. The author is a credible authority based on credentials and recognition as an expert in the field.
Features: The book is divided into seven sections that discuss topics spanning assessment and diagnosis, common psychiatric disorders, special topics, pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments, and consultation. Each section is comprised of several chapters written by experts on the topic. Figures and tables are used when necessary but are not overdone. Illustrations are in black and white. There is an associated online ebook available, which provides the same content as the physical book.
Assessment: This updated edition continues to serve as an essential reference resource for those working in child and adolescent mental health care. The book is comprehensive and provides a wealth of information on pertinent topics, from diagnosis to treatment modalities. Dulcan's continues to serve as a benchmark for the field. This newest edition is even more inclusive than previous versions, with the addition of 12 new chapters and a new section titled "Consultation." While previous editions are still relevant, updating the book's content with the most current evidence-based approaches was warranted.

I found Dulcan's textbook of child and adolescent psychiatry to be the best of its kind. It provides an authoritative, concise review of the most current literature in a manner that is balanced and intelligible. The material was organized in a readily digestible manner, with well-written narratives, bulleted summaries, and easy-to-read tables. This text would serve well as a definitive and comprehensive reference and guide to any provider assessing and treating youths with mental illness in any setting.
