Overview

The story illustrates the differences in attitudes about love and sex between the French and English. Grace (Deborah Kerr) is the daughter of a member of the British Parliament. She marries a French aviator (Rossano Brazzi) who after a three day honeymoon, leaves his war bride and spends the next nine years fighting for his country. When he returns he discovers he has a nine year old son and must explain his mistress to his family.

Count Your Blessings is a rather dull romance that's technically a comedy but doesn't seem to realize it. One can't totally blame it for this confusion, as the main point of Blessings -- that it should be perfectly okay for a French husband (albeit one with a decidedly Italian accent) to have his mistresses -- is one that modern audiences are likely to not find particularly amusing. But even if one accepts the premise as a legitimate basis for comedy, its execution in Blessings is too labored to produce the desired laughs. This is the kind of material that has to sparkle from beginning to end, that must float on bubbles of champagne. Blessings is flat all the way through, due as much to Jean Negulesco's blah direction as to Karl Tunberg's yawn-y screenplay. Blessing does have a beautiful look, with exquisite costumes from Helen Rose, beautiful décor (both inside and out) and lovely cinematography. It also has in Deborah kerr and Rossano Brazzi a pair of leads that are quite lovely to look at and who fit right in with the scrumptious surroundings. Sadly, neither actor is giving a particularly enticing performance, sunk by the quality of their material. Only Maurice Chevalier manages to rise above things, providing the film with a few much-needed lifts along the way.
