Warner Bros.' classic cartoon characters are, to quote the title of the new Looney Toons movie, back in action, in this collection of new animated shorts originally unleashed on the Internet. The animation is on a par with Warner's last-gasp 1960s cartoons, and the writing is consistently clever without relying too heavily on pop culture references that date the material (although Regis Philbin remains an irresistible punch line). Included is "Mysterious Phenomenon of the Unexplained," a multi-segment series of supernatural silliness. In one, Elmer is abducted by Marvin Martian, and in another, Bugs Bunny is revealed to be an alien responsible for crop circles. More down-to-earth are the cartoons set in the Royal Mallard Hotel. More way out are "Planet of the Taz," "Beneath the Planet of the Taz," and "Enough with Planet of the Taz." This hourlong collection also includes some funny stand-alone 'toons, including "Twick or Tweety," featuring Witch Hazel (voiced by Queen of Cartoons June Foray, the voice of Rocky the Flying Squirrel), and "Island of Dr. Moron," which reunites Bugs with the evil scientist and shaggy-haired beast from the vintage cartoon "Water, Water Every Hare." Purists may balk, but these shorts honor the anarchic spirit and smart humor of the Looney Toons of old.
