Overview

A group of curious kids get into big trouble when they decide to explore a ramshackle mansion in this horror movie. They believe that the place is empty but too soon they discover it is inhabited by a wicked sorcerer who uses black magic and human sacrifice to try and revive his comatose bride. He is very close to success and only needs a few more sacrifices. How convenient that the hapless teens should arrive at that moment. He sends out his zombies to welcome them and bring them back.

Editorial Reviews

There's something just not right with 1986's Spookies, and the answer is just as baffling as the movie itself, because Spookies is actually two movies edited into one! It doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that there are a couple of wildly different pictures at war with each other in this flick. In one end of the ring, there's an Evil Dead-inspired haunted house story with teenaged rascals gettin' it on when they're not battling the grim reaper and fart monsters from hell. In the other corner is a kiddie-friendly tale featuring an Angus Scrimm/Phantasm look-alike with a monkey-boy henchman and a load of Lucio Fulci-like zombies thrown in for no good reason. The end result is a boxing match of silliness that is peppered with highly quotable dialogue when it's not knocking the audience around with out-of-nowhere story lines and jarring edits. While the haunted house story (initially titled "Twisted Souls") shows some promise, the newly shot Tall Man footage is wildly uneven and tends to take the viewer out of the film anytime it rears its head in, and some may mourn that the Twisted Souls film can never be pieced together with the rest of its excised footage. There is definitely something special about the weird cut-and-paste quality of Spookies that makes it too good on its own merit a change now. Stupid, outrageous, and strange to the core, this is one '80s video that needs to be seen to be believed.
