Overview

Larry the Cucumber, Bob the Tomato, and all of the other Veggie Tales characters return with Duke and the Great Pie War. As has been the case with all of the films in the Veggie Tales brand name, this 25th release features animated vegetables acting out stories that teach viewers important life-lessons taken from the Bible. In this case, the tale of Ruth and Naomi has been adapted. The story features a brand new Veggie Tales character, a rhubarb who goes by the name of Sweet Petunia.

Veggie Tales serves up yet another nutritious helping of faith-based computer animation with a pair of biblical tales, cast with the familiar all-vegetable ensemble. The first story, "Baby Sitter in De Nile," depicts the tale of the infant Moses and his sister, Miriam, who is jealous of the attention being lavished on her new baby brother. In the title story -- based on the story of Boaz, Ruth, and Naomi -- Duke from the kingdom of Scone defies his countrymen to extend kindness to exiled "Rhubarbarian" princess Sweet Petunia. Linking the two stories is an always crowd-pleasing "Silly Song," in which Larry the cucumber's attempt to sing the blues is foiled by his own happiness (the song climaxes in a fit of yodeling). The writing throughout is especially fresh and crisp, achieving Pythonian heights of silliness. "How many Rhubarbarians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?" a soldier anachronistically queries. "What's a lightbulb?" his comrade asks. "I don't know," the soldier replies, "but if I did, I'm sure it wouldn't change my negative opinions of Rhubarbarians." There is also a "Who's on First" routine courtesy of -- you guessed it -- the abbot of Costello, and a cornucopia of truly dreadful puns, among them "serf" music and Three Dog Knights. And did you know Larry had three brothers? They take a break from the hardware store to make their momentous Veggie Tales debut.
