Dying for Dusty
Lizbeth lives a “free, feral, unfettered” lifestyle at Popes Creek in Virginia--an oasis where innocence is lost and bad decisions made, spontaneously, like her marriage to Jayden—a troubled soldier who fears deployment to Iraq. Jayden returns home more broken than when he left, and Lizbeth attempts to heal him. When she can't,she seeks refuge with Dusty, a Vietnam veteran who lives in her friend’s basement. Dusty's words both inspire and haunt her. When Dusty dies, homeless, Lizbeth delves into a dark place gripped by paranoia, fear, and a loathing for an unjust society that denigrates the elderly and the disabled; but before she can see the “good people” to which Dusty refers, and tell their story, she has to face her own biases and learn how to forgive.
