Overview

It is the last night before Tanglewood Memorial closes for good, and MRI technician Mike Hughes arrives for his final shift at the hospital. Between the bare-bones staff and the fact that all the patients have already been moved to the new facility, Mike is prepared for a quiet night.

All that changes when a special patient arrives, complete with a five-man police escort: the infamous serial killer Frank Snow has been brought in for a brain MRI. As if that's not enough, Mike's wife Sarah decides to drop in unexpectedly, along with their young son, Eli. Then Snow unexpectedly breaks free, cuts the power, and locks the doors. Now he's loose in the old, dark hospital, hunting its last occupants one by one, and escape seems to be the furthest thing from his mind.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Mike Hughes didn't expect his last night at the soon-to-be closed Tanglewood Memorial Hospital to be particularly memorable. But one patient wreaks havoc upon everyone left in the building when the lights go out. Trapped in the foreboding environment, Hughes and others must escape the brutal and deadly clutches of serial killer Jon Snow. Raudman delivers an enjoyable performance overall. Her pacing works well for the many suspenseful moments of the tale. While listeners may not be flinching at the exciting bits, they will certainly feel pangs of anxiety as Raudman increases her pitch and pace. Her tone, deep voice and light rasp often add to the suspense of the story. While some of her male characters come across as vocal caricature, Raudman's best talents reside in her vocalization of Snow and the maniacal edge within her performance that perfectly embodies him. Simultaneous release with Del Rey hardcover (Reviews, Aug 20). (Nov.)

"Renée Raudman is a pro who gives the performance all she's got." ---AudioFile

APR/MAY 08 - AudioFile

A psychopath with supernatural connections is loose among a small group of people locked in a soon-to-be-closed hospital in Hershey, Pennsylvania. And the inevitable murders begin. Joe Schreiber's EAT THE DARK is wordy and heavy on mood and tension reminiscent of Stephen King—but a little short in the delivery department. There are several subplots roiling under the surface, which sometimes move the plot along and sometimes slow it down. Reader Renée Raudman is a pro who gives the performance all she's got, but her voice is a bit too gentle for the scary bits. The predominantly male cast of characters also puts her at a disadvantage.
